The goalkeeping area has been problematic position for Argentina in recent years. As a result, the national team coach Alejandro Sabella has been looking at various options in order to call up for the upcoming friendly against Romania.
This will be the final friendly match for Argentina before they enter into the World Cup 2014. They go into the tournament as one of the favourites to win the competition due to the deadly partnership of Sergio Aguero and Lionel Messi.
However, Sabella will have reasons to be concerned about the backline – especially the goalkeeper, in spite of a Sky bet bookmaker review that states that Argentina will be nailed on favourites.
He is reportedly looking at Crystal Palace goalkeeper Julian Speroni, who has performed exceptionally well in recent weeks for the Premier league outfit. Earlier this season, they were struggling against relegation, but the arrival of Tony Pulis has changed their fortunes dramatically. They are now close to getting into the top half of the table, but it has not been without the form of Speroni.
Argentina‘s first match of the World Cup will be 15 June when they take on Bosnia and Herzegovina.
“I have been told that the coach has been watching some of my games on DVD, which is very pleasing to hear. I’ve just got to keep doing what I’ve been doing for Palace and hopefully I will earn a call-up to the squad for the friendly next month. Obviously the decision is out of my hands but it would be a dream for me to be called up. I’m very pleased with my form this season; I’m working so, so hard to keep improving,” said the goalkeeper.
